One of the most rewarding parts of my career has been seeing ideas move from the lab into real products and applications. I’ve enjoyed solving technical challenges, developing new products, and helping others use rheology to better understand how material properties relate to end-use performance. It’s especially satisfying when that work leads to solutions that make a difference for the business or for customers...

Understanding the Viscosity of Hydrocarbon-based Liquids by Eric B Sirota, ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company Abstract: A framework is described for quantitatively understanding and predicting the compositional and temperature dependence of the viscosity of hydrocarbon-based liquids, based on the Modified-Arrhenius equation which captures behavior associated with the approach to the glass transition, even at temperatures well above it. The framework is shown to apply across a broad range of materials, including bitumen, asphalt, lubricants, vegetable oils, and polymer solutions...
In Memoriam: Miroslav Grmela (1939-2026)
Miroslav Grmela, a trailblazing Canadian physicist, passed away on June 16, 2026 in Montreal at the age of 87. Grmela was a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, where he made substantial contributions to the fields of thermodynamics, rheology and geometry. He amassed over 280 academic publications, including articles as recently as March 2026. In 2018, Grmela published a bookabout his theories and received the S.G. Mason Award from The Canadian Society of Rheology. See link for more on his life and science.

Explore how to investigate the structures of materials under flow by using a rheometer and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instruments at ORNL. The workshop is organized in collaboration with NCNR, and features hands-on experiments, analysis of 2D RheoSANS data, and lectures on theories and cutting-edge scientific examples. We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. Jan Engmann passed away on July 8 after a serious illness.
Jan contributed greatly to the vitality of ESR as an Elected Committee Member from 2018 to 2024 and was a frequent contributor to the AERC meetings. We will greatly miss his insightful contributions to the field of rheology and his presence within our community.
Trained at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Jan obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and then joined Nestlé R&D in 2002, where he became a well-recognized expert in rheology and food microstructure, food product and process design.
