officially formed on December 19, 1929
We were one of the five founding members of the American Institute of Physics,
We have held Meetings of The Society annually since our inception and have sponsored publication of technical and scientific papers in this field in various journals, currently in our own Journal of Rheology
Many physicists, chemists, engineers, biologists and mathematicians find a common meeting ground in the Society’s meetings and publications. Our membership represents a wide spectrum of individuals from academic, industrial, and governmental institutions whose activities include both phenomenological and molecular theories, instrumentation, the study of many types of materials such as polymers, metals, petroleum products, rubber, paint, printing ink, ceramics and glass, foods, biological materials, floor preparations and cosmetics, and a wide range of practical applications.

I am happy to report that this has been an exciting and extremely productive year for the Society. As we quickly approach our centennial anniversary in 2029, we have begun a number of important projects designed to modernize our society, to increase and improve our visibility, and to provide new valuable resources to our members. These projects include: teaming up with APS to help plan our annual meetings starting with Boston in 2026; the introduction of a redesigned logo; the creation of an online education platform called the Rheology Academy; and the development of a new website with the help of AIP...With these new initiatives, the Society of Rheology is positioning itself for another 100 years as the nexus of rheological research and practice.
Our Mission Statement
adopted by the SoR Executive Committee, 10 June 2017
The mission of The Society of Rheology is to expand the knowledge and practice of rheology through education, partnership and collaboration with associated fields, industries, and organizations, as well as to disseminate to diverse communities what rheology is, and how it impacts humanity and the world. To achieve this mission, The Society of Rheology is committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion among all of our members, as well as more broadly throughout the field of rheological sciences and practice of rheology. Through our actions, we strive to value and respect all individuals, regardless of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, physical appearance and ability, socioeconomic background, region, and immigrant, military, or veteran status. This value and respect is also not contingent on discipline, employment sector or educational status. The Society of Rheology also seeks to understand and remove barriers to diversity, equity and inclusion in our community, as well as obstacles to professional growth and advancement of our membership.
