Dear SOR student members
Do you have an interest in service to the Society of Rheology? We have two new service opportunities for your consideration.
1. The Society is seeking a student member to serve in an advisory role on the Executive Committee by broadly representing SOR student interests. The student representative to the SOR Executive Committee will provide guidance and advice to the Executive Committee, in a non-voting role. Requirements include attending the executive committee meetings in the spring and fall -- the fall meeting is on the Sunday immediately preceding the Annual SOR Meeting. Note that limited financial support is provided for travel. Questions about the representative position can be directed to the current student representative (Elise (Chuqiao)Chen) or to the President of The Society of Rheology (Jonathan Rothstein).
2. We seek a Student Member to serve on the Community Development Committee. This committee meets approximately monthly via teleconference and at the SOR Annual Meeting, and among other activities, is developing enhanced student programming at the annual meeting. Applicants should be attending the annual society meetings over the course of the term of service. Applicants with leadership or organizational experience in student-focused career development programming (such as a GRS) are especially encouraged to apply. Questions about the position can be directed to the current student member (Arshiya Bhadu) or to the Committee Chair, (Katie Weigandt).
The term for both positions is Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2027, non-renewable. Applications are due by December 15, 2025. Application should be in the form of a single, three-page PDF consisting of a cover letter highlighting your qualifications, including any leadership or executive service, a one-page brief CV, and a short informal letter from your thesis advisor simply acknowledging their support for your service commitment. Be sure to indicate which position (or both) you are applying for. Applicants should be a student member of The Society of Rheology at the time of application. If an accepted applicant graduates during their term, they are expected to remain active in the position. Students intending to complete their dissertation before the end of the term but committed to fulfill their term while a postdoc or young professional in a rheology career, will be considered without prejudice.
If you wish to apply for both positions, upload two separate applications
The deadline for applications is Dec. 15, 2025
These are important positions for the Society and will provide excellent experience for students interested in service and leadership positions in their careers.
Thank you,
Jonathan Rothstein,
President, The Society of Rheology
Seeking photos/videos/remembrances for SOR Centennial
In October 2029 the Society of Rheology will celebrate 100 years of “everything flows”! In addition to a memorable Centennial Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, the Society is undertaking many exciting projects to commemorate and celebrate a century of proud history and progress. Special articles and issues in the Journal of Rheology and Rheology Bulletin will provide perspectives on rheology’s past and future, and we are expanding our efforts to document the Society’s people, history, and impact over our first century. We are seeking contributions from our members to help with these efforts.
We invite anyone who has SoR-related photos, videos, reminiscences… and is willing to share them as part of our publicity, history, and centennial celebration activities to upload them here
You’ll be able to find all of this content on our shiny new website that we are launching this fall. We hope these activities will inspire the SOR community as we enter a second century of exploring the science and engineering of deformation and flow.
