Rheology Research Symposium

The Society of Rheology is hosting the 6th annual Rheology Research Symposium (RRS) on October 24-25, 2026 in Boston, MA

The SoR Rheology Research Symposium (RRS) will take place October 24-25, 2026, immediately before the 97th Annual SoR Meeting held October 25th-29th, 2026. All RRS participants are eligible to receive travel grants to offset the costs of attending the RRS and the Annual Meeting. Full participation in the RRS and attendance for the entire SoR meeting is required to receive travel funding.

The RRS aims to provide mentoring and professional development opportunities to students within The Society of Rheology. A sample program for the 2022 RRS in Chicago can be found here . The 2026 program is currently in the planning stages. Additional details will be provided to successful RRS applicants this summer.

Eligibility

Any graduate student who is a member in good standing of the Society as of the date of submission of the application is eligible to apply for RRS. In addition, the student must present a paper or poster at the SoR Annual meeting and stay in the RRS designated hotel. All RRS participants will be provided with six nights (Check-in: Friday October 23 / Check-out: Thursday October 29) of lodging at the conference and all costs associated with the RRS. Meeting registration, travel to and from the conference, additional nights of hotel, and any other costs incurred during the SoR meeting are the responsibility of the applicant. Hotel reservations will be made for all participants and roommates will be assigned based on questionnaire responses.

How to apply

Applications will be accepted starting April 24, 2026 and close on May 15, 2026. Successful applications will be awarded based on the rating of responses to the questions on the application form (see below). Some consideration may be given to students that are in their final year of graduate school and unable to apply in the future. Notification will be made soon after the close of the application submission window (mid June).

Student Application

To apply, the student must fill out the Student Application Form. The application will ask for the applicant’s seven-digit SoR member number (no leading zero) and details about their accepted abstract. It will also include several questions about the student, their career goals, and their commitment to The Society of Rheology.

The answers to these questions will be evaluated using a rubric designed to judge quality of the student responses with an emphasis on rewarding responses that demonstrate that the students are prepared to learn and grow throughout the RRS and SoR meeting and are committed to the rheology community.

Advisor Form

The student’s advisor should submit the Faculty Advisor Support Form to certify that the student is a member of the Society, indicate the session and title of the submitted oral presentation or poster abstract, and confirm that the student will be the presenter. The advisor must also commit to pay for the students travel to and from the conference and the SoR meeting registration fee, as well as any additional nights of hotel if required to ensure that the student can attend the entire RRS and SoR meeting. The advisor must submit this form by the application deadline of May 15, 2026.
