Dimitris Vlassopoulos
Dimitris Vlassopoulos is Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Crete (since 2002) and Affiliated Faculty Member of FORTH (since 1992), a national Research Center in Crete, Greece. He received his diploma (bachelor’s degree) at the National Technical University in Athens, Greece (1983), and his MA (1986) and Ph.D. (1990) at Princeton, all in Chemical Engineering. He has worked industrially for Metelco in Greece (1983-1984) and Mobil R&D in Paulsboro, NJ (1990-1992). He has been visiting Professor in several European and American Universities.
The underlying theme of his research is the molecular rheology and engineering of soft materials. Experimental strategies to probe the rheology-structure interplay are devised, based on the design of model systems with adaptable molar mass, macromolecular architecture or tunable interactions, and on bridging polymers and colloids. Current topics include nonlinear rheometry with emphasis on improving capabilities to measure normal stress differences, microrheology at extreme pressures, and the rheology of ring polymers, macromolecular networks, jammed topological states, vitrimers.
Vlassopoulos received the FORTH prize for basic research (2009) and was awarded the 2015 Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology, and the 2019 Bingham Medal of the SOR. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (DPOLY) in 2019 and of the SOR in 2018.
Prior to becoming Editor in Chief of the Journal of Rheology, Dimitris served as co-Editor of Rheologica Acta (2006-2011) and Associate Editor of Soft Matter (2015-2021). He also served at SOR Member at Large (2013-2015).
